Jerusalem is a major city, but not representative of the housing struggles in other parts of Israel. Cities that had to be built from scratch, often under extreme conditions, faced very different challenges. That gap is a big part of what this story is about. It also shows how disconnected life in Jerusalem or Tel Aviv can be from what was happening in other parts of the country. The discrimination in housing distribution is not a secret. It shaped Israel for generations and is still impacting people today.

We were lucky. After a year in an 18m room in Kiryat Yovel (1976) we found a nice little apartment and four years later we had the great fortune to get a semi detached single storey house and garden for £36k which we eventually expanded to three storeys. My wife passed away in 2021 and with my second wife I still live there.
