My husband, daughter and I participated in a Free America anti-Trump rally for Independence Day. We ended up walking with people who were also shouting Free Palestine. Only one of the several people with whom we tried to have a dialog actually listened.

I told her the reason children in Gaza are dying can be traced to the unsolved question of how to conduct a moral asymmetric war. That we have wrestled with the question of how to effectively deal with people who, valuing no lives of their own people (except as shock troops and propaganda tools), weaponize their women and children-- and we've been dealing with it since Viet Nam. The Russians handled it in Afghanistan, using their own terror tactics, by directly targeting children. We recoiled. Israelis are forced into hard choices, with children and injured used as shields and with trained and armed youth fighters. We recoil. In asymmetric warfare, terrorists use what gives them the best return for their efforts. We, not in a war zone, can't stomach it.

In consequence, Israel is fighting a propaganda war they cannot, currently win. Every day we see people, so ignorant of Middle Eastern history that they can't even spell Israel, passing judgment on a fight for survival they cannot imagine. They just know that decent people don't bomb civilian housing. They can't conceive how that could become a military target. Yet, we and the Israelis have proven that it can.

However, when my spouse tried to shift the conversation, to mention the simplest ceasefire solution: the return of the hostages. No reply. When he asked if the hostages had rights--to rescue, to return, to live? No response. If there could be any rationale for the throttling deaths of the Bibas children? The mudered infants and elderly in the Oct 7 pogrom? People immediately turned their backs and simply walked away. No one wanted to hear it.

A willing participant in the propaganda war, AOC wept at our support for Israel's Iron Dome. Presumaby, also at any external support for those essential national bomb shelters. When will anyone think to weep for the waste of Gazan life caused by the inaccessible tunnel shelters? That celebrated Hamas-built, Arab-funded underground network sheltering Hamas leadership, that could have saved many, if not all, civilian casualties, had Hamas opened it to civilians as haven. The obvious solution to the question of where were the Gazans to go, when Israel gave their prior warnings, alerting civilians to coming attacks. So many morally outraged people seem willfully blind to the obvious. Is it antisemitism? Is it anti-complexity? Is it band-wagon effect? Is it that we, as people, truly have no intrinsic value even to the moral many?

Whatever. The propaganda war continues. And, as of now, we Jews are all losing.
